Soon after Capt. Kevin Brown returned GOLD RESERVE to the PCI at Holiday Isle Marina on Feb.10th, the rain subsided. It was a great day of fishing for Anglers John Flynn (left), Steve Robinson, Ken Jones, Alec Gillis and Dan Slovic. Very nice catch of Feb. Mahi-Mahi along with a 25 lb. and 40 lb Wahoo.

Jim Awerkamp (left), A. J. Adams, Ed Adams and Bruce Murphy were Offshore this week with Capt. Jon Reynolds on DROP BACK. Celebratory beers were had by all after a great day on the water and a catch of Mah-Mahi, Cero Mackerel and a Rainbow Runner.

YABBA DABBA DOO with Capt. Steve Leopold returned Feb. 10th with a rack full of King Mackerel.

Capt. Chris Barth of RARIN' T' GO II Charters had a foursome of Anglers and a great catch of Kings for the day.

PRIORITY was Oceanside Islamorada as well on Feb. 10th. Capt. A. J. Stewart reported his Anglers had a fantastic catch of Mutton Snappers and Kingfish.

Capt. Mel Walker had a couple of writers with the Florida Sportsman Magazine fishing on board GOTCHA Feb 10th. The pair had a catch of Yellow Tail Snapper, Mahi-Mahi and Kingfish.

If ever there was a resort “transformation” story in the Florida Keys it has evolved on the eastern edge of Islamorada (mile marker 84.5) at the former Holiday Isle, built in 1961 after notorious Hurricane Donna. Famous for decades as a haven for thirsty Rumrunner and bikini contest fans at The World Famous Tiki Bar, the 12.5 acres of oceanfront housed 143 rooms, several bars and restaurants, a marina for charter boats and flats skiffs, and a reputation for hard drinking and oftentimes rowdy behavior. Besides their annual “Bartenders Bash” and odd late-1980s appearances by minor celebrities like Gary Busey, Tiny Tim, and the Beach Boys (via helicopter), the contrast with Islamorada’s somewhat stodgy corporate image spoke volumes on class distinction and boisterous high jinks separated only by the Whale Harbor Bridge.

Facing Demolition
After a fire in 1999 in their Rumrunners Island Bar and its reconstruction, the property was bought in 2006 for an astonishing $98 million with grandiose plans for a Greek-island deluxe condo/hotel mix called Ocanos. Three years later, following no construction and the real estate bubble-bust, it was foreclosed by Starwood Capital. Facing demolition, the owners happily decided last year to invest $11 million to restore some luster to the proud but ramshackle complex. The resort’s Managing Director Bob Van Bergen explains: “We are thrilled to now offer this revamped resort to new guests that will discover what makes this laid-back part of the state like no place else in the country.”

Distressed is Cool!
In fact, the design team has taken tacky, low-ceiling motel rooms and cleverly re-arranged the limited space with an updated “boathouse” look that complements the adjacent marina. Besides super-comfortable knockoffs of Starwood Hotels’ patented “Westin Heavenly Bed,” there are rope-wrapped headboards, patchwork-wood dressers, lucite cutouts of tarpon, Italian light gray driftwood tile, and stenciled quotes on the wall like: “Many go fishing all their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” Thanks to the stylized accent of new exterior wood cladding, a sixth floor pergola, landscaping with new grass, palms and sea oats, and a palette of blue, white and gray, the mood exudes clean playfulness, a perfect fit for sportsmen, families with kids, and even the well-heeled party goer. Says Starwood Interior Designer Liubasha Rose, “We took a disaster of smelly carpets and ugly neglect and made a great room product with an attractive price point. “Distressed” has become cool and approachable!”

Bars to Burgers
Part of their new formula is the link with tradition. It is hard to escape the World Famous Tiki Bar adjacent to the marina with its original frozen Rumrunner drink: a secret blend of Banana Liqueur, Rum, Brandy and Grenadine. Next door, guests walk along the oceanfront where boaters conveniently tie up for lunch at the Jaws Raw Bar for conch fritters, smoked fish dip, and Mahi Mahi fish sandwiches or the Wreck Bar for pizza and ice cream. On the far end of the property the rebuilt Rumrunners Island Bar still maintains its whimsical “treehouse” crow’s nests that offer great views of the wide sandy beach, swimming pool and Atlantic ocean. Fronting the Overseas Highway the new Shula Burger, brainchild of the winningest coach in the NFL (347 victories), has a simplified menu of appetizers, eight burgers (blend of premium black Angus beef, short rib and brisket), sides, salads, beer and wine, and sweets. I enjoyed Don’s “Wine Country” burger with roasted peppers and tomatoes, fresh goat cheese, and balsamic greens along with fried pickle spears, a Rumrunner, and a slice of Key Lime pie.

Activities +...
For on-site activities the Postcard Inn Beach Resort & Marina has come up with an imaginative twist by hiring Christy Cockrell, their “Manager of Events & Fun”. Christy provides kids with arts & crafts, smores on the beach, scavenger hunts, ice cream social and pool games; for the elders, she organizes beach volleyball, trivia and dance lessons at the Tiki Bar, Texas Hold’em poker and beer/wine tastings. Out and about in Islamorada, guests should visit the Morada Way Arts & Cultural District off the Keys’ Old Highway where cute boutiques and art galleries open their doors daily; every third Thursday monthly they set up a walkabout with food and crafts stands...

Sassy Lady
The next day at the Postcard Inn’s marina I met Captain Butch Green of Sassy Lady Charters for a half-day of reef fishing on his 34-foot Hatteras. Originally from Pensacola, Capt. Green spent four years fishing the Red Sea for Prince Khaled Bin Sultan Bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia and has targeted sailfish and marlin in the Bahamas, Cozumel and Cuba. To satisfy my obsession for mutton snapper he decided to take me to one of his secret spots off Alligator Reef Lighthouse several miles offshore. After patiently waiting out for ballyhoo, his mate Captain Jon Reynolds threw a 14-foot net and caught over a dozen of the beaked baitfish. Ironically, Captain Butch’s secret location that morning was smack in the middle of a sailfish tournament from nearby Cheeca Lodge. Still, I hooked up with a total of six muttons (up to 15 pounds) and three large yellowtail caught slow-trolling with the fresh ballyhoo on long leader and heavy lead weight. Back at the dock Captain Green scaled and gutted a large mutton snapper for my wife’s superb herb-stuffed baked recipe with white wine for dinner back in Miami.

Tiki Bar Memories
That night, after another Rumrunner at the TikiSluggo, AWA loves DAX, STILETTO, Elwyn, Capt. Nemo, and Wilhelm the Great. Whoever they were, living or dead, sober or inebriated, those names floated back memories of people flushed with their own momentary happiness. Thanks to some foresight and imaginative investment at least no demolition ball was permitted to obliterate that tiny tribute!

Jason and Jeff Chang from the northeast came down for their annual fishing trip with Capt. Bruce Anderson aboard the Capt. Easy. They were rewarded with a catch that included Kings, Snappers and Trigger fish.

Capt. JR Rudzin of the Capt JR took Bob and Lou Morgan from Ga. and their friend Chuck from Pa. out for a day of fishing and caught a couple of nice Mahi Mahi slammers, a black fin tuna and a mess of Alamaco Jacks.

Pretty in Pink fished aboard the Pretty Work with Capt. Aaron Brower in the Woman's Sailfish Tournament and had a total of 4 sails.

From the left, Matteo, Gabe and Anna, spent a half day aboard the Suzanne Too with Capt. John Taskowitz fishing on the reef. They were rewarded with a fine catch of Yellow tail and Mutton snappers.

The 23rd Annual Poor Girls Sailfish Tournament held February 1st had a total of 29 vessels in the one day event with 69 releases. 1st place honors were secured by Lady Anglers on TAG 'EM with 6 releases, 2nd place to the Ladies on board CATCH 22 with 5 released Sails and 3rd place was captured by DROP BACK Lady Anglers out of The PCI at Holiday Isle, also with 5 releases. Congrats to this year's tournament winners and a job well done by all Captains, Crews and Poor Girl Anglers!

Kevin Brown, the Pretty Work with Capt. Aaron Brower and the Yabba Dabba Doo with Capt. Steve Leopold.

There was some heavy duty cranking Jan 27th on RARIN' T' GO II hauling in some 'big uns'. Capt. Chris Barth kept Anglers Doug Gustafson (left), Corey Richardson, Eric "Pee Wee" Badgley and Aaron Snyder busy battling some huge Amber Jack. Cero Mackerel and Almaco Jack rounded out the days catch.

Rich and Cindie Auble fished with Steve Raskind on board CAPT. EASY navigated by Capt. Bruce Andersen. The trio of Anglers caught a variety of fish on this Jan. 27th Offshore Charter. Spiked on the rack are Yellow Tail Snapper, Cero Mackerel, Almaco Jack, Amber Jack and King Mackerel.

Tuesday, January 24 found Chris and Jim Singley fishing with Capt. John Taskowitz aboard the Suzanne Too. They spent the day on the reef catching Yellow Tail snappers.

John and Kendra Marshall brought their daughter, Hailey Stewart to the Keys for vacation and took time to go fishing with Capt. John Taskowitz aboard the Suzanne Too. Hailey caught her first sailfish and they all had a great time on the water.

Martin Bontjes and Dillon Cokenour came down from Davy Fl. for a day of fishing with their parents. Capt. Chuck Shimmelman of the Dee Cee put these young anglers on the fish and they had a ball.

Capt. Steve Leopold of the Yabba Dabba Doo spent another fantastic day on the water putting his anglers on sailfish. They caught and released four on a half day charter. It's always nice to see laundry flying from the riggers as the fleet comes in.

Backcountry Fishing Report by Captain Steve Murray

Sunny Warm Weather Fishing

It's January and the weather is in the 70's, it's sunny almost every day and the fish are biting. There aren't too many places in the United States, or most of the world for that matter, where you can make a true statement like that.

The redfish are schooled up big-time right now. Low tide situations are producing large numbers of fish in the channels, run-offs and the deeper cuts along the mangroves. On the really high tides they are schooled up on the flats as well. Mike and Fran Chapin were in from the Chicago area for there annual winter fishing trip. They experienced some intense non-stop action of the powerful, schooled up feeding redfish. We boated more than 50 reds in the 2-6 pound range and some bully black drum up to 7 pounds. The action was fast and furious. Sore arms and smiling faces at days end. There's been a few snook in the mix as well and some real bruisers up to 14 pounds. Very nice to see our snook population coming back from the cold snap we had a few years ago.

The trout bite remains as good as ever. We've been getting some nice fat fish up to 22 inches. These beautiful speckled sea trout are great fun for the whole family. It's not uncommon to catch 80-100 in a 1/2 day trip. The action is fast. Doubles and triple hook-ups when the bite is on. For consistent action it's hard to beat the trout, snapper and spanish mackerel bite this time of year. If you're someone who enjoys bending the rod - fish after fish - these are the species to target. This is a great way to get a kid hooked on fishing.

The shark fishing can be good this time of year - although I do prefer the warmer months for more consistent action. George Luburich is a regular and he's the kind of guy who wants something large on the end of his line. We landed a nice 6 pound snook, several jacks and ladyfish and then it was time to go after Jaws! We cut up the jacks and ladyfish for bait. Baited up the shark rod and let the big man hang on and wait. George boated a big stingray and his brother-in -law landed one of the biggest sharks I've seen in the backcountry - weighing in at a whopping 350 pounds. Happy guys heading back home to the north. George will be back again in the spring for his annual tarpon trip. The big 100-200 pound tarpon will start showing up in March and the peak time will be mid April through June.

Here are some photos from a Christmas day trip with Gerry and Carole Keil of Denver and Michael Kuschner from Maryland aboard the Drop Back with Captain Jon Reynolds and Mate Gary. The group caught 2 mutton snappers, 2 Black groupers (one weighed 27 pounds) and a 90" Sailfish.

GOTCHA Charters had a late return Jan. 14th after a successful Offshore voyage. Capt. Mel Walker reported a variety of fish landed by Anglers this day that included Cero Mackerel, Kings, Mutton Snapper, Blackfin Tuna, Bar Jack and the release of one Sailfish. That's a whole lot of fishing!

Capt. Steve Leopold of YABBA DABBA DOO Charters has his hands full with part of the days catch of King Mackerel (Scomberomorus cavalla). Known throughout the sportfishing world for their blistering runs, the King Mackerel matches its distant relative, the Wahoo, in speed.

The Burkhart Brothers and Dad had a great time fishing on The DEE CEE and returned with a fantastic catch of King Mackerel, Blackfin Tuna and Mahi-Mahi. Pictured left to right is Capt. Living the Dream...Islamorada Fishing out of The Postcard Inn Beach Resort and Marina at Holiday Isle!

Ever hear the one about the fish that got away? Here's one that tried but didn't quite make it. The PHOEBE returned from an Offshore Charter Jan. 12 with Anglers Willie & Cathy Chucta (left) along with Margret & Jim Brookes with King Mackerel and Willie's Blackfin Tuna. As the crew was unloading the days catch, the Blackfin 'jumped' back in the water. Capt. Frank 'Dru' Drudi plunged in the water after the 31'' Tuna and captured it under the 40 foot Hatteras. Later that evening, the two couples enjoyed seared Blackfin Tuna and Willie will soon be enjoying his replica mount of 'the one that didn't get away'. Happy Birthday Willie!

RARIN' T' GO II had a reunion of long lost cousins on an Offshore excursion Jan. 12th. Vacationing in The Keys from Norway, Beate & Daniel Hengy (left) and friends Nina Platou & Thim Barth escaped the snow and sub-freezing temperatures of home for Sailfishing in The Keys with Capt. Chris Barth. This days reunion and fishing were great! The Anglers released 3 Sailfish, boxed Blackfin Tuna and battled a Barracuda.

Eric and Jennifer Bruhns from New York State celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary aboard the DROP BACK with Captain Jon Reynolds and Mate Gary Salyers. It was their first ever off-shore fishing trip and they hooked up a DOUBLE HEADER! Captain Jon provided pictures of Erik and Jennifer with the sails they caught before releasing them.

Sailfish on Fly, Offshore Islamorada in The Florida Keys

Future world renowned Angler, fly rod fishing expert and local Islamorada resident, 11 year old James Klein is surrounded by GOTCHA Capt. Mel Walker and crew members Cody and Ross after an offshore voyage Jan. 6th. James tuned his fly rod technique by first catching a Dolphin on the fly, then directed all efforts for the days goal...Sailfish on the fly. After several attempts with lookers and no takers, young James never lost sight of the days mission. Then it hit...FISH ON!!! James battled the Sailfish for an hour on a Hardy Rod, equipped with an Abel Reel on 11 weight fly line and retrieved his custom tied Tube Fly before releasing the Sailfish. Awesome day of fishing James, just awesome!

Two good friends, John Simerly (left) of Orlando, FL. and Kevin Dean, in The Keys from Phoenix, AZ., spent the day fishing the blue water side of Islamorada on CAPT. J. R. Jan. 6th. Capt. J. R. Rudzin led the Anglers to a nice catch of January Dolphin, a couple of Jacks and one of those tasty Mutton Snappers.

Blackfin Tuna and a Bar Jack on The DEE CEE rack for James Narel and his Grandfather, Ed Peliwan. This pair of Anglers were fishing with James' sister, Alexa and Mother, Monika Narel. The family is vacationing in The Keys out of 'The Windy City', Chicago. Capt. Chuck Schimmelman also reported the group released a 25 lb. Gag Grouper.

It was a day of family fishing and a first Offshore trip for Elijah fishing with his Dad, Sean Joseph on The SUZANNE TOO navigated by Capt. John Taskowitz. Elijah, proud as a peacock, shows his first saltwater catch, a Tilefish. This Father/Son team had a great catch that included Blackfin Tuna, Bonita, Mahi-Mahi, King Mackerel and Mutton Snapper.

These four guys were here with the Artnack wedding party and had a nice catch of King fish aboard the Yabba Dabba Doo with Capt Steve Leopold.

These guys are here on vacation from Germany and went out with Capt Kevin Brown aboard the Gold Reserve to catch King fish and were not disapointed.

January 2 found Katie and Chris Swart from Charlett NC fishing aboard the Pretty Work with Capt Aaron Brower. They caught and released three sailfish.

Capt J.R. Rudzin took his family out aboard the Capt. JR for a fun family day of fishing. He never fails to find the fish!!!!

The Swartz family, on their vacation here in the Florida Keys decided to go out for a day of deepsea fishing aboard the Drop Back with Capt. Jon Reynolds.They had a great time and caught a fine rack of Mahi Mahi.

Pretty good day of fishing on PRETTY WORK Dec. 29th for this family of 4 from Miami, FL. Capt. Aaron Brower had Angeles and Orlam Sonora Oceanside and on the fish with their son, Giancarlo and daughter Dominique. The days catch included 2 Black Grouper, Yellow Tail Snapper, Mangrove Snapper and Cero Mackerel.

Mahi-Mahi on the rack for these Anglers out of Northern Michigan. There was a large group of Matelski family members to welcome the men back from their Offshore excursion.

Ah, the power of positive thinking...Jerry Mullin and his son Gerard were at the dock of YABBA DABBA DOO early morning Dec. 29th for an Offshore Charter with Capt. Steve Leopold. Tradition has it, when an Angler releases his or her first Sailfish, he or she is 'tossed' in the water. Young Gerard took the 'plunge' before the trip began. Later that day he hooked up his 1st Sailfish and released it to fight another day. This father/son team returned with each releasing a Sail, boxing Black Fin Tuna, King Mackerel and memories that will last a lifetime.

Dan Spangler and his two sons, Derrick and Danny were in town Dec. 29th from Cincinnati, OH. and spent a half-day fishing SASSY LADY with Capt. Butch Green. The boys had a battle with a Barracuda and boxed King Mackerel. Looks as though a Shark decided to munch down on part of the days catch.

Don Raskind won the battle with this 100 plus pound Goliath Grouper on a recent CAPT. EASY Charter with Capt. Bruce Andersen. 1st Mate Mikey Mason successfully vented the Grouper's air-bladder in the water, released the fish and the monster swam back to the depths below.

The crew on PHOEBE, Capt. Dru Drudi and 1st Mate Danny Brack had a busy day Dec. 29th with 2 trips Offshore. The morning Charter had a Anglers from Maryland out on the Reef catching Yellow Tail Snapper, Amber Jacks, Cero Mackerel, one Red Grouper and a Shark release. That's a lot of fishing for the first half of the day. The afternoon trip had its sight set on targeting King Mackerel.

'Twas the night before Christmas, at the Holiday Isle Marina,
Not even a mouse was stirring, over at the Cantina;

The Offshore Boats, all tied in their slips with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The Captains and Mates were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of fish danced on the water in their heads;

And momma in her 'kerchief and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long Florida winter's nap;

When out on the water there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter;

Away to the pier I flew like a flash,
Tore open my tackle box & heard another big splash:

The moon on the crest of the newly made waves,
Gave rise to the love of night fishing I craved;

When, what to my wandering eyes should appear,
But the Grandpappy of Swordfish & 8 Keys Deer;

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled and shouted and called them by name;

"Now Mahi! Now Tuna! Now Marlin and Sailfish!
On Snapper! On Grouper! On Wahoo and Hogfish!

To the top of the porch! To the top of the sea wall!

My sea legs were steady, my stomach in a knot,
I had to catch that Grandpappy Sword, yes that's what I thought;

So I tossed a bait at the Grandpappy Sword,
He hit it hard, I held tight and thought 'Oh, my dear Lord!'

The rod bent over and the drag had a steady bellow,
2 hours and 49 minutes later I landed this Grandpappy fellow;

The battle was over and I won the fight,
The best ever gift on a Christmas Eve night;

Sport-fishin' in The Sport Fishing Capital of The World is fun,
So I released the Grandpappy Sword, my good deed was done;

But I heard exclaim, ere he swam out of sight,

"Merry Christmas to all and to all a good-night!"

FIRST CHOICE Charters trip Dec. 22nd produced a first for Angler Brett Yerg with a Sailfish release. Brett was fishing with his Dad, Todd and Beth Yerg with Capt. Larry Wren. The days catch also included King Mackerel and a couple of fighting Barracuda. The Yergs were vacationing The Florida Keys out of PA.

Islamorada Fishing Offshore in The Beautiful Florida Keys

It is a mild 1st day of winter in The Florida Keys today, Dec. 22nd. A little breezy, no snow and the AC is still on in the Booking Office! Another POSTCARD Picture perfect day for Offshore fishing.

Little Jeffrey was Oceanside fishing with his Dad, Jeff and Mom Fanita Dec.16th on board CAPT. J. R. Capt J. R. Rudzin had this family from GA. out catching Mutton Snapper, Barracuda, released one Sailfish and landed a Yellow Jack that was just about as big as Jeffrey.

Capt. Larry Wren was Offshore Dec. 21st with a couple of Anglers, Jim Patte and friend. The FIRST CHOICE Charter was a success with a catch that included Dolphin, Black Fin Tuna, Barracuda and Grouper.

Veteran freshwater fisherman Zach holds a Sailfish release flag after a day of fishing with his Dad, Steve, Dec. 21st. Capt. J. R. Rudzin and 1st Mate Doug had this pair of Anglers on Mahi-Mahi, Yellow Tail Snapper, Barracuda and King Mackerel.

Elly and Brian O'Brien came to the Keys with their parents for a family vacation. Mom and Dad took them out fishing with Capt. Jon Reynolds aboard the Drop Back and they had a fantistic catch.

These three fishing buddys went out with Capt. J.R.Rudzin on the Capt JR and had a great day of reef fishing.

Tuesday 12-13 found Marty and Gwynn Yoder from Howe Ind. fishing with Capt. Chris Barth aboard the Rarin'T'Go II. This is a fine catch of makeral.

Kathy Dyer gave Dan an early retirement gift of a fishing trip in the Keys. They went out with Capt. Bruce Anderson aboard the Capt. Easy and had a great catch of makeral and caught and released six sailfish.

These fishermen John, Blake, Steve and Billy were back for a second of fishing aboard the Dee Cee with Capt. Chuck Shimmelman.

Nick Bailes, Amanda Wade and Ronnie Howell spent a day fishing aboard the Killer White with Capt. Chris Barth on Dec. 6th and put up some fine Mahi Mahi.

Movers Specility Services out of Montgomery Pa. had their anual company fishing trip to the Fl. Keys on Dec. 6th . This trio,John McDonough (Boston) Hal Breffle (Atlanta) and Pete Ray (Denver) fished aboard the Capt. J.R. with Capt. JR Rudzin.

This trio, Greg Arena (Oakland) Dan Corral (Jacksonville) and Jim Ray (Denver) fished aboard the Dee Cee with Capt. Chuck Shimmelman. They caught and released four sailfish.

This trio, Joe Feris (Chicago) Chris Hughes (Philly) and Wayne Jacelon (NY City) fished aboard the Capt. Easy with Capt. Bruce Anderson and had a great catch as well as catching and releasing three sailfish.

Islamorada Fishing, Offshore in The Florida Keys out of The Post Card Inn at Holiday Isle!!!

Young Ryan Bannerot man handled this Black Grouper while fishing with his Dad, Scott and Uncle Steve on board YABBA DABBA DOO. Ryan and Scott came from the Land Down Under, Australia, for a visit with Uncle Steve in Islamorada. In addition to the Grouper, these Anglers had a fine catch of Yellow Tail Snapper. Uncle Steve is better known as Capt. Steve Leopold with YABBA DABBA DOO Charters.

Members of the Amato Family, Dave (left), Chris, Greg and Rick were fishing with Capt. Kevin Brown on GOLD RESERVE. Chris, a Naples, FL resident and his N.J. relatives had a nice Dec. catch of Mahi-Mahi. It was another Post Card picture perfect day for Offshore Islamorada fishing.

Miami Anglers Manny (left), Manny, Jr., Ted, Ahmed, Eddy and Luiz were fishing again with Capt. J. R. Rudzin on The CAPT. J. R. This group of Anglers battled a half a dozen or so Monster Barracuda and brought back Black Grouper, Mutton Snapper, Mahi-Mahi, Black Fin Tuna and Yellow Jack.

Bodacious wins Islamorada Sailfish Tournament, 'Deadliest Catch' Star Awards Trophy

After winning the 48th annual Islamorada Sailfish Tournament Dec. 4, team Bodacious accepted the trophy from tournament angler and special guest Captain "Wild" Bill Wichrowski, skipper of the fishing vessel Kodiak from the popular Discovery Channel television show "Deadliest Catch."

Islamorada’s Captain Taylor Walsh led Bodacious’ quartet of anglers - Tavernier residents Henry and Shay Danzig, and Islamorada’s Allen Wood and Nick Stanczyk - to release 22 sailfish during three days of fishing.

Entering the third day with 19 sails and a slight lead, the Bodacious team focused on location and patience.

"We knew we were in an area where there were fish," said Henry Danzig. "We just stayed calm and waited our turn."

The team released the day’s third and final sail at 2:54 p.m., just minutes before lines-out was called at 3 p.m.

Shawn MacMullin Jr. of Key Largo, Fla., also scored a memorable tournament win. The 11-year-old not only has fished the event five times, but his eight sailfish were caught and released in the shortest time. For that feat, MacMullin was named overall high-point angler and captured the junior angler title.

A lucky raffle drawing landed MacMullin a sailfish pendant valued at $500. Wichrowski, who fished the tournament on board My Reel Job, asked the boy to autograph the winning ticket and give it to him for good luck fishing back in Alaska.

Second place overall went to Contagious, out of Islamorada, with 20 releases. Captain Brian Cone led teammates Bill Keller of Islamorada, Travis Bennett of Tavernier, Fla., and Greg Toplin of Key Largo.
The team aboard Wound Up, skippered by John Dudas of Miami, placed third with nine releases. Anglers were Warren Sands of Pinecrest, Fla., and Miami residents Jeff Liederman and Robbie Ramirez.

Team Bodacious is to receive an invitation to the 2012 IGFA Offshore Championship in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, for the tournament win.

Overall, 261 sailfish were released, according to tournament organizer Dianne Harbaugh.

The Islamorada Sailfish Tournament is the first leg of the Florida Keys Gold Cup Sailfish Championship. Next in the series is the Cheeca Lodge Presidential Sailfish Tournament, scheduled Jan. 20-22, with the final leg Jan. 26 at the IFC Sailfish Tournament.

The first leg of the Florida Keys Gold Cup Championship Series kicked off yesterday with the Islamorada Sailfish Tournament. A total of 23 boats entered the tournament that runs through tomorrow, Dec. 4th. A first day total of 92 hook-ups were called in to the Committee Boat, resulting in 77 Sailfish caught and released. 3 boats were tied at 7 Sailfish caught and released after day one with a large group on the leaders tail with 5 Sails and right behind them, a number of vessels with 4. It's still anyones tourney to win! 'GO GET 'EM!'

SUZANNE TOO Capt. John Taskowitz (left) is pictured with Anglers Alvaro & Edith Suarez, Benjamin Suarez, Oscar & Karen Guedez and 1st Mate Travis along with another fine late November catch of Dolphin and a big 'ol Wahoo. Benjamin and Oscar won the battle and landed the 61 pound Wahoo, one of the fastest fish in the sea.

Steven, Steve, Ambrose and Jason back at the dock of GOLD RESERVE after a late November day of fishing with Capt. Kevin Brown. Steve and his sons are from Naples, FL and family friend Ambrose made the trip from Battle Lake, MN. The days catch included Tuna and Mahi-Mahi.

Postcard Inn director of Activities & Fun, Christy Cockrell and her friend Melinda Bauer had a lot of fun fishing with Capt. Larry Wren aboard the 1st Choice on Monday 11-28. The highlight of the day was the catch and release of a very large sailfish.

Martin Laroche and France Corbeil came down from Canada for a vacation in the Keys and were treated to a great day of offshore with Capt. Jon Reynolds aboard the Drop Back. Great Mahi Mahi catch and another sailfish release.

The Island Christian School had an auction last Christmas and these lucky winners of a day fishing offshore on the Killer White with Capt. Chris Barth, had a great catch of Mahi Mahi. (left to right)--Dick, Jeff, Christy, Martha,George and Bob.

Doug and Susanne Kramer came down from Ohio for the sixth time to fish with Capt. John Taskowitz aboard the Suzanne II. Doug got the large Wahoo.

Here it is, the end of November and the Mahi Mahi bite is still going strong as ever.

Greg and Penny Plunkett and their son Walker from Atlanta Georgia spent the day aboard the Gold Reserve with Capt. Kevin Brown. They found the Mahi Mahi and caught their limit.

The Wooster family, Mike, Deb, Jessica and Jake from Annapolis Maryland were here on vacation and enjoyed a great day of offshore fishing aboard the 1st Choice with Capt. Larry Wren. The end of November is a great time for Mahi Mahi as seen by the rack of fish hanging behind them.

Brian and Kelly Lamb and their son Wyatt from Tampa Fl. had fun fishing aboard the Drop Back with Capt. Jon Reynolds. The Mahi bite was good and on the way in they stopped to catch and release a nice Sailfish.

These New Hampshire residents, Dick and Steve Cole, and Nancy Talbott were vacationing in the Keys for the first time and went out on the Suzanne II with Capt. John Taskowitz. The double rack of Mahi Mahi was the best catch of the day.

Evan Roukis (holding the sailfish release flag) and family members Denise,Alex, Morgan and Paul had a very good catch of Mahi Mahi aboard the Dee Cee with Capt. Chuck Shimmelman. Joung Evan caught the largest Mahi Mahi of the day.

These New Jersey fishermen caught their limit of Mahi Mahi aboard the Suzanne II with Capt John Taskowitz on Tuesday November 22nd. Look closely at the shark bite in the Mahi that he is holding.

Sailfishing Tournament Honors Legendary Captain

A weekend of sailfishing honors one of the Florida Keys’ late great captains at Islamorada’s Don Gurgiolo Sailfish Classic, set for Friday through Sunday, Dec. 9-11.
Gurgiolo, one of the pioneers of contemporary offshore light tackle and live ballyhoo fishing techniques, fished for 50 years while operating the Gonfishin’ charter boats. The well-liked skipper retired in 1995 and died in 1999, but his legacy continues.
The 12th annual event, part of the Redbone at Large tournament series, kicks off with registration at 6 p.m. Friday at the Post Card Inn Resort & Marina at Holiday Isle, the newly re-named and recently renovated Holiday Isle, located at mile marker (MM) 84 oceanside. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres follow, with a rules meeting at 7:30 p.m.
Fishing on Saturday is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., followed by a 5-7 p.m. standings party at Wahoo’s Bar and Grill at Whale Harbor Marina, MM 83.5 oceanside.
Fishing resumes at 8:30 a.m. Sunday and runs until 3:30 p.m. Dinner and awards are scheduled from 6:30 to 10 p.m. in the Horizon Room at Post Card Inn Resort & Marina at Holiday Isle.
Boat teams compete for the most release points in the all-release tournament. First- through third-place awards, as well as high-point angler awards, are to be given.

NASCAR photographers Nigel Kincade (left), Russell Labounty, Tyler Barrick and Brian Czobat went offshore fishing before the final 2011 NASCAR Race in Homestead, FL this weekend. The Anglers were fishing with Capt. Larry Wren on The FIRST CHOICE Nov. 17th. Russell caught and released a Sailfish and the group did a 'hook & cook' with Dolphin, King Mackerel and Grouper at a local restaurant.

Local Keys insurer, Rob Morgan and friends were reef fishing with Capt. A. J. Stewart on The PRIORITY Nov. 17th. Anglers Dave Burbrink (left), Rob Morgan, Steve Schrott, Ken Rettinger and Don Trenkamp returned with a boatload of Yellow Tail Snapper and a few Mutton Snapper.

Sailfish honors of the day go to Jacquie and Greg Jack fishing The YABBA DABBA DOO with Capt. Steve Leopold and 1st Mate Colby on Nov. 17th. This couple from Blacksburg, VA. caught and released 3 Sailfish! They returned to the Holiday Isle Marina with plenty of dinner that included a nice Black Fin Tuna, a 36 lb. Wahoo, Dolphin and Cero Mackerel. Congrats on a fine day of fishing!

Capt. Mel Walker had Anglers from New York City celebrating a 70th Birthday by doing some fishing on The GOTCHA. The group had a fantastic catch of flag Yellow Tail Snapper on Nov.17th.

NASCAR Pit Inspectors had a little R & R Nov. 17th before the final NASCAR Race of the season with Capt. Chris Barth on KILLER WHITE. The Anglers boxed 26 Yellow Tail Snapper after catching and releasing a Sailfish.

These four fishermen from Connecticut, Lou Anastasio, Chick Marcucci, Frank Adkins and Ralph Gagliardi made their annual trip to the keys to fish aboard the Capt Easy with Capt. Bruce Anderson. The reef fishing was fantastic and then they caught and released one sailfish.

Alberto Rivera, FL. (left) was paired up with two sisters, Jenny Zander and Anna Hagman from WI. along with Chuck Vencill out of VA. on this Nov. 5th trip.

Horace Wilder and his son Corry had a fantastic day aboard the Drop Back with Capt Jon Reynolds and mate Jeremy. They limited out on the Mahi Mahi then cast baits at sailfish but none were in the mood to feed.

These four friends....Joe Smucny, Brad Ward, Jon Coomer and Tim Heath fished aboard the Susanne Too with Capt. John Taskowitz on Sunday November 6. Brad is the one who caught the nice King fish.

Tiffany Castro and Gregory Ashe were offshore recently with Capt. Larry Wren fishing on board FIRST CHOICE. This pair of Anglers from Ft. Lauderdale, FL caught a couple of nice Mahi-Mahi, Yellow Tail Snapper and Mutton Snapper.

Robert (left) and Louie from Tampa fished with longtime friends Frank out of Boca, FL and Chris, all the way from CA., on The CAPT. J. R. with Capt. J. R. Rudzin. These Anglers hauled in a couple of big Amber Jacks and a half dozen Bonita's on a 'bit of a bumpy ride' on the deep blue side of Islamorada.

Dirul Munajj (left) from San Antonio, TX fished with his Uncle out of Houston, TX, Kwame Munajj on board DEE CEE Charters. The successful half day trip netted the Anglers Dolphin, Cero Mackerel and Black Grouper.

Veteran Capt. John Taskowitz made his maiden voyage out of the Holiday Isle Marina yesterday, Nov. 4, 2011. Florida resident Tim Heath (left) and friends from Ohio, Brad Ward, Jon Coomer and Joe Smuncy had a blast and a great Mahi-Mahi catch on board The SUZANNE TOO.

There was a huge turnout of Family and Friends of The Legendary "Trapper" John Petersen at Holiday Isle Nov. 4th for the 'Tribute to Trapper'. Friends scheduled the benefit for Trapper at Holiday Isle and hoped he would be able to attend. Trapper succumbed to an aggressive form cancer last Sunday, Oct.30th. Trapper's spirit was with all last night as the crowd enjoyed great musical entertainment, food, libations and fond memories of Islamorada's and Holiday Isle's best known bartender.

Day 1 for John Eaton offshore fishing with Capt. J. R. Rudzin on The CAPT. J. R. John landed Barracuda, King Mackerel, Yellow Tail and Mutton Snapper on the first day of two days on the deep blue waters off Islamorada.

Capt. Bruce Andersen had Romano (left), Lorenzo and Roberto offshore on The CAPT. EASY at the end of October. This trio of Anglers caught and released two Sail Fish and boxed King Mackerel, Mahi-Mahi, an Almaco Jack and what was left of a nice Black Grouper after a toothy critter attack!

Sunday 10/23 saw Bobby Henrich and Gary Wurster ( blue shirt) from Fort Lauderdale fishing aboard the Gold Reserve with Capt. Don and first mate Hadden. The amber jacks and black grouper made the day one to remember.

Occasionally a Manatee makes an appearance in The Holiday Isle Marina basin. This gentle giant was just relaxing the other day near the Offshore docks, two others in the pod were spotted by the Backcountry docks. A flip of its tail and he or she was off and rejoined the group.

A little foul weather on Saturday Oct. 8th didn't keep these Anglers from fishing Offshore with Capt. J. R. Rudzin on The CAPT. J. R. The venture paid off with a variety of species boated that included Cero Mackerel, King Fish, Mahi-Mahi, Barracuda, Yellow Jack and a 12 lb. Mutton Snapper.Pictured left to right out of the Miami area is Armando, Luis, Luis, Ramon, Jannell and Giovanni.

Scott and Cindy hit their limit of Mahi-Mahi and landed a couple of fine Triple Tail to boot on an Offshore Charter on GOLD RESERVE. Capt. Don Jenkins had this couple from Houston, TX on the 'Windex Blue Water' off Islamorada on Oct. 12th.

Tom Kennedy (left) from Cleveland, OH and friend Larry Naylor of Duck Key in The Florida Keys went Yellow Tail fishing with Capt. Mel Walker on Oct. 12th. The half day reef trip on GOTCHA Charters netted this pair of Anglers a limit of Yellow Tail Snappers along with several Cero Mackerels.

Capt. Ted Benbow with SKIN and FINS Charters was on the Backcountry side of Islamorada Oct. 12th. Angler Tommy from Cocoa Beach, FL is pictured with a very nice Snook he boated.

They're back! Food Truck Invasion at The Holiday Isle Resort and Marina tomorrow, Friday October 14th from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Herb Olivencia from Fort Lauderdale brought Jessica Childers out for her first day of deep sea fishing. They went out on the Killer White with Capt Aaron Brower and caught their limit.

The Redfish are coming!-The Redfish are coming!

No, not The Redcoats - "The Redfish"! Ever since the cold blast we had back in January 2010 the redfishing has been excellent. This last weekend it was as good as it gets. My brother was in from Bozeman, Montana and we loaded up the 21 Redfisher and headed to the Flamingo area for some great redfish fishing. We worked hard the first few hours hitting the deeper Island moats. It was tough, we only landed one red and several ladyfish. It was high tide and I figured these fish must be "up on the flats" so we headed for a luscious grass flat with good water flow and as we pulled up slowly with the trolling motor - the water "came alive" - tails, pushes, wakes from redfish everywhere! Quick, get a cast in there! Bam, Bam - two reds on and several following our hooked fish in toward the boat. Then the water really came alive with well over 500 redfish scurrying across the flats. They were working a section of the grass flat about 200 yards long and 50 yards wide. They would move away when we hooked up and after a minute or two they would move back into our range and Bam, Bam hooked up with another double. They were all 2 to 5 pounders and this went on for about an hour. A big thunderstorm moved in on us and we left the reds - still biting. We boated well over 70 fish. It doesn't get any better than that!

Last week we worked the flats up in the Bites (or what is better know as Bays in most areas). The baby tarpon were out in force and we landed 3 for about 7 on jerk baits and swim baits. These baby tarpon were making crazy jumps and headshaking that can toss the hook in a hurry. They were averaging 2 to 8 pounds. Lots of fun on light spinning rods. We also got into a few nice snook and redfish. Snook up to 8 pounds and reds up to 6 pounds. The trout and snapper bite has been excellent as well.

The Fall is always a great time to fish. The high tides pull lots of feeding fish up on the grass flats and when they see a free offering they readily accept - usually in a very aggressive manner. The change in the season is right around the corner and these fish will again change there feeding habits - but that's OK - I think I know where they will be.

Come-on down to the Keys for some great fishing!

When you are in Islamorada for a bachelor party, you've got to go Offshore fishing and that's exactly what these wedding party members did with Capt. Steve Leopold on The YABBA DABBA DOO. Matt Dumas (left), Chad Rodgers, Corey Maddock, Vic Spear and Thomas Cresse caught their limit of Dolphin on Sept. 17th.

The theme of the day was 'Dolphin Limit Catch' and another limit of Dolphin returned to the Holiday Isle Marina in the fish box on GOLD RESERVE with Capt. Don Jenkins. Anglers Elizabeth, Pablo, Yamila and Marlon from Miami display part of their limit of Dolphin with the balance of the catch on ice.

SHAZAM!!! Another Fantastic Mahi-Mahi catch out of Holiday Isle Resort & Marina, Islamorada, FL. in The Florida Keys!!!

September 16th was...an incredible day, Mahi-Mahi everywhere offshore for the Charter Boats and Anglers out of Holiday Isle. A perfect 4-0 day, 4 Charters out and each hit the Mahi-Mahi limit for Anglers on board. Dolphin were as plentiful offshore as Harley's and Custom Choppers were on the Overseas Highway headed to Key West on the annual Poker Run.

John Burks (left) from Pauls Valley, OK and friend Sandy Swords out of Hollywood, FL, split a Charter with Bret Berkey from Cleveland, OH on FIRST CHOICE Charters. Capt. Larry Wren and Anglers returned to The Holiday Isle Marina with another limit catch of Dolphin. Brett recently won the Ohio Walleye Federation Championship Tournament held on Lake Erie.

1st Annual Island Community Cleanup

Holiday Isle Resort & Marina and LaSiesta Resort & Marina in conjunction with Veolia Environmental Services and the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce held its 1st Annual Island Community Cleanup on September 10th to help keep our beaches, waterways and roads clean. Groups, families, individual residents and businesses helped to clean and pickup trash by land and sea between milemarkers 72 and 90. A thank you party was held following the cleanup at Holiday Isle Resort and Marina.

These anglers, Jim, Zachariah, Matthew, Lucas, and Cameo from Ft. White, Fl. had a great day aboard the Capt. Easy with Capt. Bruce Anderson. This is great rack of dolphin and tuna.

The Young family...Ed & wife Tammy and their children, Win and Julianne from Rockhill SC. had a fun day aboard the Yabba Dabba Doo with Capt. Steve Leopold. The tuna bite was a little slow but they all had a great time.

Phil Seelig from NY.NY. caught these fine tuna and a nice Amber Jack aboard The Hunter with Capt. Chris Barth.

This family spent some time at the hump with Capt. Larry Wrenn aboard the First Choice. The sharks limited their total catch but they still had a great time.

Chuck and Zilke Blair from Ponce Inlet Fl. had a great time aboard The Hunter with Capt. Chris Barth at the hump catching blackfin tuna.

Rod Curuea ( red T ) and Eddie Chaves from Miami got tuna and Mahi while fishing aboard the Sassy Lady with Capt Butch Green.

Steve Green and Elaine Blair spent a day aboard the Capt. JR with Capt. JR Rudzin fishing in the gulf stream. They got over 30 dolphin and a couple of wahoo and a fine tripletail.

Late August fishing out of Holiday Isle was really great.

Jeane, Connor, Nick and Mike spent the day aboard the Capt. Easy with Capt. Bruce Anderson and had a great catch of tuna and Mahi Mahi.

These anglers fished aboard the Killer White with Capt. Aaron Brower. Their tuna catch is typical of this time of the year with dolphin and a cero mackerel thrown in.

Capt. Bruce Anderson took this couple out to the "hump" aboard the Capt. Easy for a day of tuna fishing. Needless to say it was a good day.

These six anglers had a realy good tuna bite 12 miles out at a place called the "hump". Capt Chris Barth on The Hunter knows where the fish can be found on any given day.

We've been experiencing 'growing pains' with the renovations taking place at 'The one Isle that has it all!' and it's finally coming together. Soon (Sept. 20th???) brand spanking new rooms will be available for your Keys vacationing pleasure like the one pictured below! Stay with us, fish with us, at Holiday Isle!!!

Half of the resort’s 150 rooms are offline right now. They’re scheduled to be finished in mid-September, and then the other half will get their makeover. The rooms will be “boathouse chic” — a little retro and a lot of comfortable, with tile floors that look like driftwood.

Dave & Reid Jenkins fished with Jenny & David Townsend way back in August on CAPT. EASY with Capt. Bruce Andersen. The trip was a success for these folks from Sarasota, FL, that's a fine looking rack of Tuna.

The Tuna bite is on in The Keys! Robert, Joseph and Michael, in no particular order, fished with Capt. Mel Schimmelman in late August on board The DEE CEE.

KILLER WHITE had these unidentified Anglers out on the Windex blue waters here in The Keys. Capt. Aaron Brower had this group out of PA. on Schoolie Mahi-Mahi, Tuna & boxed a tasty Wahoo!

Capt. Mel Walker (a.k.a. The Ladies Man) with GOTCHA Charters fished with Chris, Patty, Carol, Chris and K.C. on another picture perfect day here in The Florida Keys. These lady Anglers had a blast catching Mahi-Mahi!

John Lebrecht (NY) and Jessica Livengood (FL) were spending a few days in The Florida Keys recently in Islamorada and decided to do what alot of people do in The Sport Fishing Capital of The World...Offshore Fishing! This couple's first offshore experience was with Capt. Bruce Andersen on board The CAPT. EASY.

The Murphy's from Atlanta, GA. were all smiles back at the dock after a day of fishing The DEE CEE with Capt. Chuck Schimmelman. Another fine looking rack of Mahi-Mahi!

... The dreaded BLUE SCREEN at the Booking Office computer over the weekend...here's a few photo's transferred and posted from a remote location,... KILLER WHITE after a full day (depart before sunrise and return after sunset!) of offshore fishing in the Florida Keys...Tim Douma, Jon & Sarah Pegman and Matt Van Deaze. Vera Douma also made this full day adventure and is missing from this photo. Fantastic catch!!!

While vacationing in the USA, the Conti family from France visited The Florida Keys and went Offshore fishing for a half day charter on KILLER WHITE. Brigitte (left), Emilie, Bruno and Lucas landed Yellow Tail Snapper, King Fish, Tuna and Mahi-Mahi August 11th. Capt. Mike Mason suggested a 'Hook n Cook' for lunch to the Conti's before leaving The Keys for the mainland.

Sushi on THE HUNTER rack for Jane and Brad Pake after fishing the blue water side of Islamorada with Capt. Chris Barth on August 11th. Jane and Brad reside in Felton, MN. 'The Land of Lakes' and were spending a little vacation time in Paradise.

The Food Truck Invasion starts today at 5:00 pm in The Holiday Isle Marina parking lot.....

Tuesday August 9 was a good day to be fishing out of Holiday Isle Resort and Marina in Islamorada, Florida Keys.

The Murrant family Phillip, Laura, Oliver and Edward from Hertfordshire, England went out for a half day fishing on the reef with Capt. J.R. Rudzin aboard the Capt. JR and caught Yellow Tail snapper. There would have been many more if it hadn't been for those pesty sharks.

John and Kayle Pinkley came down from Arkansas on vacation here in Islamorada. Capt Bruce Anderson of the Capt. Easy took them to the reef an a half day trip and the catch speaks for it's self.

The Self family, Tim, Sara, Haley and Cody went out on the Gold Reserve with Capt. Kevin Brown and caught a great rack of Black Fin tuna. It made for a great family day on the water.

Malcolm and Karen Stokes from Venus Florida had a great catch of Mahi Mahi aboard the Killer White. The fine Triple Tail was a bonus for the day.

Capt. Larry Wren of the 1st Choice had a short notice charter and came through as he always does. The Times family from Kansas City caught their first tunas and dolphin on a half day afternoon trip.

Summer fishing out of Holisay Isle Resort and Marina is still Hot as ever.

Trey & Blayre Palmer and Doyle & Kim Kerley from Tenn. came to the Florida Keys for the 5th time to fish witdh Capt. Mel Walker aboard the Gotcha. It turned out to be a memorable day on the water with a good Mahi Mahi catch.

Capt. Kevin Brown of the Gold Reserve consistantly puts his anglers on the fish. These guys brought in a great catch of Mahi Mahi, AKA 'dolphin'.
